While I Was There
The first 2008 project I undertook was producing the book, While I Was There, for the company The Memoirs Foundation. It is the autobiography of a Hungarian Jewish woman, Susan Gimesy, a holocaust survivor, now 88 years old and living in Melbourne. I felt this was really a story worth telling. Her story has been included in the great collection of interviews with holocaust survivors initiated by Steven Spielberg after he made Schindler’s List. We became good friends and I loaned her Rahmaniyah Bowden’s autobiography Honour and Duty which she was fascinated to read.
Noor
The second project was a dance workshop called NOOR which I ran with a dancer, Melanie Gower. Some years ago, Geoffrey Armes, a Subud musician living in New York produced a suite of music dedicated to the woman known as “Noor” a Sufi princess, a writer and musician, who became a secret agent for the Allies in the Second World War and was captured by the Gestapo and executed at Dachau. It is an inspiring story of courage and self sacrifice and I always thought you could give people a great experience of those values by arranging a workshop around the music which is very dance orientated. I met this dancer Melanie Gower who was enthusiastic about it and we ran the workshop and it went well. We then ran a 2nd workshop around the theme of peace on the International Day of Peace.
Eva’s Back Porch Cafe
The third project is called Eva’s Back Porch Café and it is a collection of original songs and stories based on the year that I spent living in the town of UKI in Northern new South Wales. A Subud member financed the development of this project through SICA enabling me to put a band together to rehearse and perform the show. This first performance went well and now we are planning to take it into 2009 with more performances. The show runs for 90 minutes including a 20 minute interval. A CD of the songs has been made.
