Subud, the acronym for Susila Budhi Dharma, is a spiritual movement whose members belong to all cultures and religions and who are united through a spiritual exercise in the worship of God. Subud is currently active in most countries around the world. There are many groups around and Subud is the governing body that attempts to bring this diversity together as a single community united by the Latihan Kejiwaan (spiritual exercise) of Subud.
Subud is a spiritual movement based on surrender to God or the universal life force. It was founded in 1924 by an Indonesian man called Muhammad Subuh Sumohadiwidjojo after he received direct contact with this Universal Life Force and was shown that this gift he had received was for all mankind. He was able to pass on this simple form of surrender dedicated to the worship of Almighty God and those that received this gift from him have been able to pass it on to others and so it continues to this day. This Latihan Kejiwaan of Subud is available to any individual who would like to experience contact with this Universal Life Force.
Members of Subud represent all races, creeds and religions and are united in this simple form of worship, called the "Latihan Kejiwaan" (spiritual exercise), which benefits equally their inner and outer lives. As an outer expression of this experience Subud has set up cultural, enterprise and humanitarian projects around the world. Subud exists in over seventy countries and numbers about 10,000 members. Its humanitarian arm, Susila Dharma, is a Non Government Organisation (NGO) affiliated to the United Nations. |
